WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?
A Midwife is a Healthcare Provider who is specially trained in pregnancy, birth and the postpartum
In Ontario, women can choose either a Midwife, Family Doctor or Obstetrician for their pregnancies. Just like family doctors and obstetricians, your midwife will provide you all of your regular checkups, order all routine tests, and prescribe commonly needed medications. Your midwife will also conduct your labour and delivery and be your baby’s main care provider for the first six weeks.
Midwifery care in Ontario is fully funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
All you need to do is present your OHIP card. In addition to providing medical care, midwives also use the following three philosophies in their work:
Informed Choice. Your midwife will take the time to explain tests and recommended procedures to you so that you can be active in choosing the course of your pregnancy care.
Continuity of Care. You will meet two or three midwives in your pregnancy. Midwives are on call for you around the clock for emergencies and we plan for one of your own midwives to be at your birth.
Choice of Birthplace. Our practice has admitting privileges at North York General Hospital for women who choose a hospital birth. Midwives are also the only healthcare providers in Ontario with the necessary skills and equipment to safely conduct a planned home birth.
